It’s hard to believe that a penny could cause a major public scandal, but that’s exactly what happened in 1909 when designer Victor D. Brenner placed his initials, VDB, on the new Lincoln Cent. Public outrage forced the U.S. Mint to remove the initials after striking only a quarter of the planned mintage. With the Lincoln Cent set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2009, these scarce coins are sure to be extremely popular.
