Two of the most unique U.S. coins ever issued—the $2.50 and $5 Indian—dropped from U.S. Mint coin presses between 1908 and 1929. Unlike other U.S.coinage, this series featured designs that were incused; that is, sunk into the metal versus raised above the surface. When first released, many expressed concern that the recessed images would collect germs and spread disease—an unfounded fear—while others condemned the artistry. Disdain for the $2.50 and $5 Indian in the early 1900s meant few were saved, so nice examples, like these About Uncirculated specimens, are tough to find. Today, the incused images featuring a proud Native American and stoic American Eagle are revered by collectors the world over.
